Repair or Replace — The Honest Answer
Most disposal calls fall into three buckets. A jam that hums but will not turn usually clears with the hex key and reset button, and we will tell you that on the phone rather than charge a call-out for it. A unit that trips its breaker repeatedly, leaks from the body seam, or grinds with a metal-on-metal sound has failed internally, and repair parts cost more than a new unit. A leak from the sink flange or the discharge tube is not the disposal at all — it is the connection, and that is a genuine repair.
Replacement is usually the right call once a disposal passes eight to ten years, which is most of what we see in South Bay kitchens. Rebuilding a worn unit costs close to a new one and buys far less life.
Sizing It to the Kitchen
Disposal horsepower should follow how the kitchen is actually used, not what fits the budget line. A 1/3 or 1/2 HP unit is adequate for a light-use household. Larger families, rental turnovers, and anything with a heavy vegetable-prep load want 3/4 HP or better, with stainless grind components rather than galvanized. Commercial kitchens are a separate specification entirely and often require a different drain configuration to stay compliant.
Septic systems and older cast-iron drain lines both change the recommendation. On the 1950s and 60s housing common in Torrance and San Pedro, we check the drain line condition before fitting a more powerful unit — a disposal that grinds finer than the line can carry will simply move the blockage downstream.

- Clear jams and reset where that genuinely solves it.
- Replace failed units sized to the kitchen's real load, with stainless grind components.
- Repair or replace sink flange, mounting assembly, and discharge tubing as needed.
- Check the downstream drain line before uprating, especially on older cast iron.
- Test under load and leave the connection dry before we leave.
