It Is Three Trades, Not a Barbecue
An outdoor kitchen is a gas line, a water line, a drain, and a circuit — all of them permitted, all of them inspected, and all of them run before a single stone goes on. This is the part that separates a built-in kitchen from a cart pushed against a wall, and the part homeowners are most often surprised by.
Gas is the usual constraint. Adding a burner and a grill to a house whose meter and line were sized for a range and a water heater can exceed the available capacity, which means an upsized line back toward the meter and sometimes a conversation with the gas utility. Exterior circuits require GFCI protection and weather-rated enclosures. If there is a sink, the drain has to reach the sanitary system properly — not a dry well.
Coastal Specification
Salt air destroys the wrong stainless. Grades commonly sold for outdoor appliances pit and streak within a couple of seasons in Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, or anywhere on the peninsula's ocean side. Marine-grade 316 stainless costs more and is the correct specification near the water. The same logic governs fixings, hinges, and any powder-coated surface.
Counters take direct UV all day. Sealed natural stone and porcelain hold up; some engineered quartz products are not rated for exterior use and will discolor. We specify to exposure rather than to whatever matched the indoor kitchen.
