Cracked Tile Is Almost Always a Substrate Problem
When tile cracks in a straight line across a floor, the tile did not fail — the slab under it moved and the tile had nowhere to go. Concrete slabs shrink and crack as they cure and continue to move with the seasons, and a rigid tile assembly bonded directly to a moving slab transmits every one of those cracks to the surface.
The fix is anti-fracture membrane, sometimes called crack isolation, installed over the slab before setting. It decouples the tile from slab movement. Existing cracks get treated before anything goes down. On the raised-foundation homes common across older Torrance, San Pedro, and Harbor City neighborhoods, the issue is deflection instead of cracking — a subfloor that flexes underfoot will loosen tile and crack grout no matter how well it is set, so the joists and sheathing get assessed and stiffened first.
Wet Areas Are a Waterproofing Job
Tile and grout are not waterproof. In showers, tub surrounds, and bathroom floors, the waterproofing is a separate membrane installed behind and beneath the tile, with particular attention at the pan, the curb, and every corner and change of plane. Most shower leaks we are called to open up trace back to a failure at one of those transitions rather than anywhere in the field.
