We Are the Contractor, Not the Gadget Shop
Most smart-home disappointment traces to the same root: the automation was specified by somebody who was not responsible for the electrical, and it arrived after the walls closed. Devices got added to a house that was never wired to carry them.
DECOMA approaches it from the other end. We are a licensed A/B general contractor doing the electrical anyway, so the automation is designed with the circuits, the panel, and the rough-in — not bolted on at the end by a separate vendor with no responsibility for what is behind the drywall.
That means the questions get asked in the right order. What does each room need to do. Where does the enclosure live. Does the service have capacity. What conduit goes in now so the next decision is not a demolition project.
The Panel Is Usually the Real Constraint
Automation itself draws almost nothing. But it rarely arrives alone — it comes bundled with EV charging, induction cooking, a heat pump, a pool controller. Those compound, and plenty of South Bay houses are still on 100-amp services with no spare capacity in the panel.
So we run the load calculation during design rather than after. If a service upgrade is required it becomes a known line item with a known permit path, instead of something discovered when the electrician cannot land the circuits.
Stucco, Wire Lath, and Why Your Wi-Fi Is Bad
A large share of the older housing across Torrance, San Pedro, and the beach cities is stucco over wire lath. That assembly is close to a Faraday cage, and no router placed in a back office is going to cover a house built that way.
This is why wire still matters. Cabled access points, placed for coverage rather than for convenience, solve in an afternoon of design what people otherwise spend years and several routers failing to solve. Wireless devices are a convenience layer sitting on top of a wired backbone — they are not a substitute for one.
The same logic runs through lighting control, shades, and distributed audio. Pulling cable during rough-in is inexpensive. Pulling it afterwards means opening finished walls.
Design Before Drywall
The single highest-value hour on a smart-home project happens before any drywall goes up, walking the house and deciding what each room has to do.
After that point, every change is a construction decision rather than a wiring decision. Before it, conduit to the attic and the crawlspace, a properly sized enclosure, and a few spare home-runs cost very little and preserve every option you have not made your mind up about yet.
If your walls are already open for a remodel or an addition, that is the moment. It does not come around again at anything like the same price.
Permits and Title 24
Line-voltage work — new circuits, panel changes, fixture wiring — is permitted and inspected like any other electrical work.
Low-voltage requirements vary by jurisdiction and by system type, and a rule that holds in one South Bay city does not necessarily hold in the next one over. We pull every permit the work requires, whichever city it sits in. That is worth saying plainly because a good deal of smart-home installation is done by vendors who are not licensed contractors and simply do not pull anything — which is fine right up until an insurance claim, a sale, or an inspection asks who did the wiring.
California's energy code sets lighting control requirements, and a well-designed control system satisfies them comfortably. The error we see is treating automation as something separate from the compliance path instead of as the means of achieving it.

Cat6/6A and coax home-runs to a central enclosure, with conduit where a future pull is foreseeable. Wireless is a convenience layer on top of wire, not a replacement for it.

Keypad and app-controlled lighting designed around how rooms are actually used, and satisfying Title 24 controls requirements rather than working around them.

Panel and circuit capacity
Load calculation before design. Automation, EV charging, and all-electric appliances compound, and an older panel is frequently the real constraint on what the house can support.

Network and Wi-Fi coverage
Access points placed and cabled to give real coverage. Most 'smart home problems' are network problems, and stucco with wire lath is unusually hostile to Wi-Fi.

Distributed audio, media rooms, and motorized shades — cabled during rough-in when it is cheap, rather than retrofitted later when it is not.

Documentation and handover
Labelled enclosure, as-built cable schedule, and credentials handed over in writing. You should not need us to change a light schedule.

Design before drywall
Walk the house, agree what each room needs to do, and place the enclosure. This conversation is worth ten times more before the walls close than after.

Load calculation and permits
Calculate the service load with the automation, EV, and appliance plan included. Pull the electrical permit; low-voltage permitting varies by city and by system type.

Rough-in
Cable pulled, boxes set, conduit run for what comes later. Rough inspection before close-up.

Trim, commission, hand over
Devices set, system programd against real usage, coverage tested room by room, and documentation handed over.
