Camera First — Always
Nothing gets excavated before we have run a camera down the line and located what we find. The camera answers the questions that determine the entire scope: where the failure is, how far it runs, whether the problem is root intrusion, a belly holding water, offset joints, or a fully collapsed section, and where the line sits relative to the property line and the city main.
That last point matters financially. The property owner is generally responsible for the lateral from the building to the connection at the main, which frequently means the failure sits under a driveway, a mature tree, or the street. Knowing exactly where the break is decides whether this is a spot repair or a full lateral replacement.
Clay, Cast Iron, and Root Intrusion
The South Bay's pre-1970s housing was largely plumbed to the main in vitrified clay or cast iron. Clay was installed in short sections with joints at every coupling, and roots find those joints — the classic pattern is a line that backs up seasonally, clears with a snake, and returns a few months later, because rodding cuts the roots without addressing the opening they came through. Cast iron scales and thins from the inside until the invert drops out entirely.
Trenchless Where the Line Allows It
Pipe bursting and cured-in-place lining can replace a lateral without trenching its full length, which on a peninsula property with mature landscaping or a stamped driveway is the difference between a contained job and a rebuilt frontage. Not every line qualifies — a badly offset or fully collapsed line, or one with a significant belly, needs open excavation to correct grade. We tell you which after the camera survey, not after starting.
