The Roof and the Panel Decide the Project
Two things determine whether a solar project is straightforward or complicated, and neither is the panels. The first is the roof: covering an assembly with five years of service life left means paying to remove and reset the array when it fails. We assess roof condition before design and will recommend re-roofing first when that is the cheaper path over the system's life.
The second is the electrical service. Many South Bay homes still run 100-amp panels with no spare capacity for a solar backfeed, and California's interconnection rules limit how much can be backfed through a busbar. That frequently makes a panel upgrade part of the solar project rather than an optional extra. We size it as part of the design instead of discovering it at inspection.
Permits and Interconnection
Solar in California carries its own permitting path, and most South Bay jurisdictions process residential rooftop systems through an expedited review. The longer pole is usually utility interconnection — the application, the approval to install, and then permission to operate, which arrives after the local inspection has passed. Systems can be installed and physically complete while waiting on permission to operate, and we set that expectation up front rather than leaving it as an unexplained delay.
Commercial arrays add structural review, fire-access pathway requirements on the roof plane, and often a more involved service study.
